What are the benefits to students of engaging in internships?
- The interning student has the opportunity to put into practice the concepts you are teaching, thus learning how to move knowledge from abstract understanding to concrete application.
- Students in internships have a wealth of hands-on experience to relate back to their classmates, thus enhancing the discussion and benefiting the class as a whole.
- 90% of employers surveyed say that when looking to hire a new college graduate they look for them to have engaged in 1 – 2 internships during their college years .
- When asked which skills are most important in a new hire, employers say: professional communication skills, positive attitude, and teamwork skills. These can be honed in the diverse environments made available through internships.
- Graduate school admissions panels are looking at what kind of hands-on experience applicants have had, including internships.
- Internships are a way for students to test drive careers associated with their major, thus helping them to become a more focused and motivated students in the classroom.
A student has approached me about being his / her internship "faculty sponsor." What does this entail?
- Sign the student's Credit-Bearing Internship Contract, under Faculty Sponsor. (If you are also the student's Academic Advisor you will sign that line as well.) Your signature indicates your conviction that the internship, as described, will be a meaningful and pertinant learning experience.
- Assist student with developing and stating their learning objectives.
- Determine any project requirements in addition to Reflective Essay. These may include reflective journal entries, analysis of the organization, portfolio, oral presentation, etc.
- Meet regularly with the student throughout internship to ensure quality educational experience.
- Initiate communication with the on-site supervisor during the internship, and visit site during the internship, when possible.
- Follow up as needed with the on-site supervisor at end of internship to ensure receipt of Supervisor's Evaluation, which forms part of basis for grading.
- Collect student's log of activities, Reflective Essay, Supervisor's Evaluation, and any other project requirements specified in Internship Contract.
- Assign Pass/Fail grade based on completion of internship, required projects, Reflective Essay, and Supervisor's Evaluation.
My student / advisee is planning to engage in a credit-bearing internship. How can I be sure that the student will be engaged in a meaningful learning experience?
A credit bearing internship at Randolph College is a highly intentional experience with several fail-safes in place to ensure that it is filled with substantive learning and progressive responsibility. In completing the Contract, the student works with his/her Faculty Sponsor and the Internship Coordinator as needed to develop specific learning objectives that pertain to academic theory, professional and self-development, and career ambitions. Together with the on-site supervisor (employer), the student also develops a detailed understanding of the tasks and responsibilities involved. Once the Contract is complete, these four parties (student, employer, faculty sponsor, internship coordinator) all sign the Contract. Finally, the Chair of the Curriulum Committte and Registrar sign their approval. At all steps, each party is encouraged to ask the student clarifying questions about the proposed internship and how it fits with career and educational goals.
My student / advisee who is not a U.S. Citizen wants to pursue an internship. Are there specific restructions that pertain to this student?
There are very strict U.S. Department of Labor rules regarding the work-like experiences in which non U.S. Citizens may engage themselves. It is imperative that internships for these students qualify as "Curricular Practical Training" (CPT). This means that the tasks and responsibilities of the position must be tightly relevant to the student's major course of study. Furthermore, non U.S. Citizens must receive academic credit for their internship by completing the Credit-Bearing Internship Contract discussed above and include a formal offer letter from the employer.
