Offering a broad range of courses, the Music Department balances a student's interests and abilities with experience in the areas of performance, theory, and music history. Music students study under artist faculty members who offer private lessons in piano, organ, voice, harpsichord, fortepiano, woodwinds, and strings.
Students practice and perform in Presser Hall, which houses studios; listening facilities; a library of musical scores, and several thousand sound recordings; two harpsichords; a fortepiano; teaching studios; several practice rooms with Steinway grand pianos; and a recital hall with a Steinway concert grand piano and Holtkamp organ. Smith Hall Theatre features two Steinway concert grand pianos on stage. The College's Houston Memorial Chapel holds a Bechstein grand piano and a forty-rank, three-manual Holtkamp organ whose power and beauty are the source of many inspirational moments on campus.
